The Altenheim (German for "Elder's Home"), a seniors' residence on a six-acre campus in Oakland's Diamond district, was founded in the 1890s by immigrants from German-speaking countries. Phase I of the renovation project restored the beautiful campus and grounds and created 93 apartments and community and service space that houses on-site supportive services and programs for residents. After the second phase is complete, the new restored campus will consist of 174 beautiful, brand-new senior housing units available to seniors earning 20% to 55% of area median income.
