White Stag Block has infused new life into Portland’s oldest neighborhood and shows respect for the three building’s heritage with historic preservation, reuse and recycling. The 137,000 sq foot project is comprised of historic three structures all over 100 years old. The project is seeking the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. More than 99% of the material removed during construction was recycled. The project harvests rainwater in large tanks and treats the gray-water for the dual flushing toilets, reducing water usage by 86%. Wood windows were reconditioned or replaced with insulated ones and with more insulation and new HVAC system, the building is 30% more energy efficient than industry standards. This project has ignited other substantial projects in this district including the University of Oregon’s Portland Center as the anchor tenant and has brought new activity and a new tone to the neighborhood.
